The New Zealand Government Property team has worked closely with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Hīkina Whakatutuki (MBIE) Property team to agree an initial 12-year lease between MBIE and developers Willis Bond.

Around 130 MBIE people will have the opportunity to set up in the refurbished Buddle Building in late 2023, alongside Kiwirail and other government agencies.

Having offices located in Upper Hutt will increase options for flexible working locations and environments, supporting MBIE's flexible working policy. The MBIE Property team in Ngā pou o te Taumaru are in the process of finalising which teams will occupy the Blue Mountains Campus.

The campus is the first hub to be opened as part of the regional hub initiative, designed to bring public services and public servants closer to the communities we serve. Doing so will support local economies, reduce commuter congestion and carbon emissions, and create a more resilient public sector by strengthening our business continuity.

Leasing the space supports MBIE's commitment to transitioning to a low emissions economy, as outlined in Te Ara Amiorangi. The building is designed to achieve a 5 Star Green Rating and a 5 Star NABERSNZ rating, which look at things like energy efficiency, water usage and building materials. It has a 100% seismic rating and is located in a low-risk area for shaking and liquefaction, flooding, tsunami and other natural hazards.

The Government's strategy to create these hubs across New Zealand is underway, with other opportunities being led and progressed by the Government Property Group.
